55% of Bangladeshi youth interested in moving abroad due to unemployment and corruption: Study

A British Council study, “Next Generation Bangladesh 2024,” reveals that 55% of young people in Bangladesh are considering migration, citing issues such as unemployment, corruption, nepotism, and hiring discrimination.
About 42% of youth are concerned about unemployment, with 37% attributing it to corruption and favouritism, while others blame discrimination in recruitment and work-life imbalance.
The study, conducted in late 2023 with responses from 3,081 Bangladeshis aged 18 to 35, also showed a decline in optimism: in 2015, 60% felt the country was progressing positively, which has since dropped to 51%.
The British High Commissioner in Dhaka, Sarah Cook, emphasised the UK’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in building an inclusive and democratic future.
