In the story of higher education in Bangladesh, one name stands out as a beacon of vision, courage, and innovation — Professor Dr M. Alimullah Miyan, the founding father of non-government universities in the country.

His creation, the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT), established in 1991, marked the beginning of private higher education in Bangladesh. More than three decades later, IUBAT remains a pioneering institution — committed to producing competent professionals, promoting sustainability, and nurturing educated, ethical, and responsible global citizens.

A visionary beginning

IUBAT was born out of Dr Miyan’s deep understanding of Bangladesh’s development challenges and his conviction that human resource development is essential for national progress. The initial planning began in 1989, and through his relentless efforts, the university was formally established in 1991 as the first non-government institution of its kind in the country.

From its inception, IUBAT’s foundation was built on strong international collaboration. It entered into cooperative agreements with Kansas State University (USA), Assumption University, and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. These partnerships shaped its academic model, curriculum, and quality assurance processes — embedding a truly global perspective within its educational framework.

Vision and mission

IUBAT’s vision is both ambitious and deeply rooted in social responsibility:

“To produce at least one professional graduate from each village, ward, and moholla of Bangladesh to contribute towards the creation of a knowledge-based society.”

To realise this vision, the university has built an inclusive system ensuring that financial limitations never become a barrier for deserving students. Through scholarships, grants, fee waivers, campus jobs, student loans, and deferred payment options, IUBAT makes higher education accessible to students from all backgrounds.

Its mission focuses on human resource development through teaching, training, guidance, and research — fostering socio-agro-economic advancement not only in Bangladesh but also across other developing nations.

A campus designed for learning and growth

Nestled across seven acres of lush greenery in Uttara, Dhaka, IUBAT’s campus embodies its motto: “An Environment Designed for Learning.” The university’s infrastructure has been carefully designed to nurture both intellectual and emotional well-being. Spacious classrooms, a modern library, and state-of-the-art laboratories foster academic exploration, while open study areas, a Shaheed Minar, cultural spaces, and recreational zones encourage holistic development.

The campus also boasts extensive sports facilities — including football, cricket, and volleyball fields, alongside indoor games and fitness zones — promoting a healthy balance between study and recreation. Free Wi-Fi access throughout the campus supports digital learning, and its environmentally conscious design aligns with IUBAT’s sustainability goals, earning recognition under the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

Inclusive education and financial accessibility

Inclusivity remains one of IUBAT’s strongest pillars. True to Dr Miyan’s belief that merit, not money, should determine access to education, the university runs one of the most comprehensive scholarship schemes among private universities in Bangladesh. Scholarships are awarded based on SSC and HSC performance, with top achievers receiving up to 100% tuition waivers.

To promote gender equity, all female students receive a 15% tuition waiver — an initiative encouraging women’s participation in higher education. Additionally, a range of financial aid programmes ensures that no deserving learner is left behind. These measures make IUBAT a model of inclusive education, empowering students from both rural and urban areas.

The university’s long-standing goal — to produce at least one skilled graduate from every village in Bangladesh — continues to guide its expansion and outreach, reflecting Dr Miyan’s enduring commitment to national human resource development.

Transport, safety, and student support

Beyond academics, IUBAT prioritises student welfare and safety. It operates free transportation services across several routes in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, and Narayanganj — a rare and commendable initiative among private universities. This significantly reduces logistical challenges for students who commute daily.

On-campus medical facilities, cafeterias, and security services further foster a sense of safety and belonging, allowing students to focus on their studies in a supportive environment.

Bridging education and employment

IUBAT’s educational philosophy goes beyond academic achievement, preparing graduates for meaningful careers and lifelong success. The Alumni and Placement Office connects students with professional opportunities through personalised career counselling, soft skills training, and job placement assistance — helping them thrive in an increasingly competitive global job market.

A highlight of its industry engagement is the National Career Festival, an annual event that brings together over 100 reputed organisations from sectors such as banking, telecommunications, IT, FMCG, manufacturing, and NGOs. This event enables students to network, showcase their skills, and secure employment offers directly from employers.

Today, IUBAT graduates serve in leading positions both in Bangladesh and abroad — including in the United Kingdom, Canada, the Middle East, and Europe. Many work in globally renowned organisations such as Intel, NASA, and the United Nations, reflecting the international standard and credibility of IUBAT’s academic programmes.

Academic excellence and global recognition

As a pioneer among private universities, IUBAT continues to lead in academic innovation and research. It offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Business, Engineering, Agriculture, Nursing, Tourism and Hospitality, and Social Sciences. Each curriculum blends theoretical learning with practical application to ensure graduates are workplace-ready.

Research is central to IUBAT’s academic environment. The Miyan Research Institute — named in honour of the founder — serves as the hub of research activity, encouraging both faculty and students to contribute to knowledge creation. According to the Scopus Index 2024, IUBAT ranked fourth among private universities in Bangladesh for research contributions — a remarkable achievement that underscores its growing academic strength.

Its participation in QS Rankings, Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Scimago Institutions Rankings, and UI GreenMetric further cements IUBAT’s reputation as a globally respected institution committed to quality, sustainability, and social impact.

A global learning community

IUBAT’s inclusive and globally competitive environment attracts students from across Asia and Africa. The International Office provides comprehensive support to international students, ensuring a smooth academic and cultural transition. Their presence enriches campus life, fostering diversity and cross-cultural understanding — key elements in shaping socially conscious graduates.

Through global collaborations and academic partnerships, IUBAT continues to strengthen its international footprint. Exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and academic cooperation with universities in Malaysia, Canada, and the United States further advance its vision of becoming a regional hub for quality higher education.

Research, innovation, and sustainability

Sustainability and innovation lie at the heart of IUBAT’s institutional ethos. The university integrates environmental awareness into both its curriculum and campus operations — from renewable energy and waste management to green landscaping.

Faculty members and students actively pursue research addressing national challenges in areas such as agriculture, public health, technology, and social development. The rising number of peer-reviewed publications and student-led innovation projects highlight IUBAT’s evolution into a research-driven institution.

Preserving a legacy of vision and values

Professor Dr M. Alimullah Miyan’s legacy is not merely institutional; it is a living philosophy. His belief that human resource development is the key to national advancement continues to guide every aspect of IUBAT’s mission. Through programmes that combine academic excellence with civic and moral responsibility, the university produces graduates who are not only skilled professionals but also ethical citizens.

Under the leadership of the IUBAT Board of Trustees and current administration, the university continues to build upon Dr Miyan’s dream — expanding academic programmes, enhancing research capacity, and broadening access to education.

From a modest beginning in 1991, IUBAT has grown into a thriving centre of excellence with over 10,000 students, hundreds of faculty members, and thousands of alumni contributing to industries and communities around the world.

A beacon of hope and progress

As Bangladesh advances towards a knowledge-driven economy, institutions like IUBAT are vital in shaping the nation’s human capital. Its mission — to produce at least one skilled graduate from every village — remains a symbol of hope, opportunity, and empowerment.

For countless students, IUBAT is not just a university; it is a turning point — a gateway to a brighter future built on the vision of a true educational pioneer.
