The government has published the annual holiday calendar for state-run schools, showing a significant reduction in holidays for 2026.

Government primary schools, as well as secondary and junior secondary schools where the weekly holiday remains Friday and Saturday, will have a total of 64 holidays this year, down by 12 days from 2025, when schools had 76 days off, reports Prothom Alo.

According to the schedule, government primary schools will remain open for roughly half of the month of Ramadan. Holidays for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr are set to begin on 8 March 2026. However, if Ramadan begins earlier, possibly from 19 February depending on moon sighting, primary schools will stay open until the 21st day of Ramadan.

In 2025, a total of 28 holidays were granted for Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Independence Day, Jumatul Bida, Shab-e-Qadr and other religious occasions. In 2026, this has been reduced to 19 days. Holidays for Eid-ul-Azha and the summer break have also been cut from 15 days to 12 days, while the winter break has been reduced by one day to 10 days.

The revised holiday schedule applies to primary, secondary and junior secondary schools and was issued separately by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
