Poll reveals top education reform demands of Bangladesh’s young voters
The 13th National Election of Bangladesh is knocking at the door. People are excited, and there is a different vibe in the air. Based on the participation of several political parties, this is set to be a participatory election after 17 years. The involvement of new and young faces is particularly noticeable. A large number of first-time voters will cast their votes, carrying expectations and demands for the upcoming elected representatives.
We, TBS Graduates asked our energetic young audience via Facebook: “Which education reform should the next government focus on the most?” The question was structured around four key areas:
1. Teacher welfare and training
2. Practical skills, internships, and vocational education
3. Curriculum reform and equal standards across different education systems
4. Student financial support and the cost of education
The results were largely expected. 50% of respondents believe the new government should prioritise curriculum reform and equal standards across different education systems. In recent years, student dissatisfaction and the significant gaps among existing curriculum have been clearly visible.
Secondly, 44% of respondents highlighted the importance of practical skills, internships, and vocational education. This reflects the country’s unemployment challenges and underscores the growing importance of skill development.
Only 5% of the total audience felt that the new government should focus on teacher welfare and training, while just 1% voted for student financial support and the cost of education. Considering the current economic situation of the country, this finding is particularly surprising.
