A student from BRAC University has received international recognition at the prestigious World Architecture Community Awards, 53rd Cycle.

Fatiha Tanjim Oni, a student of the Department of Architecture, received the award in the Architecture Student category for her project titled “Beyond Rediscovery: Reclaiming Alijan Jute Mill as a Living Productive Landscape”.

The project was developed during the Spring 2025 semester under the supervision of faculty members Dr Mohammad Faruk, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed, Bayejid Mahbub Khondoker, and Mohammad Zillur Rahman.

Focusing on the abandoned Alijan Jute Mill along the Meghna River, the project addresses the pressing issue of neglected industrial sites in Bangladesh. It proposes transforming the historic colonial-era factory into a worker-centred, river-resilient heritage district.

The design reimagines the site as a multifunctional space incorporating a handicraft market, adaptive landscapes, housing, light industry, and cultural zones. Through the framework of New Contextualism, the project aims to reconnect production, memory, and community within a sustainable urban ecosystem.

Aligned with global sustainability goals, the initiative contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities, SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth, and SDG 13 on climate action.

The recognition highlights BRAC University’s growing presence on global academic and design platforms and reflects the institution’s commitment to innovative and socially responsive education.
