Netflix is set to introduce a TikTok-style vertical video feed within its app this month and plans to expand the use of artificial intelligence across content creation and recommendations, the company announced on Thursday.

The streaming platform has been testing the feature since last year. The short video feed is expected to help users discover video podcasts alongside its existing range of films and series. Netflix is also increasing its use of AI for recommendations following the launch of a ChatGPT powered search feature last year.

According to TechCrunch, co-chief executive Gregory Peters said the company sees significant potential to improve its recommendation systems through new technologies. He noted that updated AI models could enhance personalisation and allow faster adaptation to different types of content.

Co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said AI tools could improve the overall content creation process, while still relying on human creativity. He added that such tools would give artists more effective ways to realise their ideas.

Last month, Netflix acquired an AI-focused company founded by Ben Affleck, known as InterPositive. Sarandos said the technology, designed specifically for filmmakers, has already attracted interest from creators and could strengthen the company’s AI capabilities.

Netflix also said it aims to use AI to enhance its advertising platform by introducing new formats and greater customisation. The company expects to generate around $3 billion in advertising revenue this year.

In its first-quarter results, Netflix reported revenue of $12.25 billion, a rise of 16.2 per cent compared with the previous year, while profit increased by 83 per cent to $5.28 billion. The company also announced that its co-founder and chair, Reed Hastings, will step down from the board this summer.

The company recently increased subscription prices in the United States and said it ended 2025 with 325 million paying subscribers.
