The grand finale of the 18th National Debate Festival, organised by Motijheel Government Boys’ High School Debating Club, after much deliberation and fervor, finally came to a close with much fanfare on December 28, 2024. More than 150 debaters from 48 high schools, colleges, and universities were in the race. All this amplifies that debating holds a crucial role in sharpening the critical acumen of young students.
A Platform for Young Minds
The festival started on December 26 with the inter-school and college category debates in which 48 teams competed through several rounds of exhaustive debating and adjudication. The second day was the inter-varsity segment, where almost 100 university debaters participated in thought-provoking arguments.
Semi-finals and finals of the three-day long tournament took place on the final day on December 28, along with the closing ceremony, attended by several reputed guests. Hafizul Islam, former headmaster of Motijheel Government Boys’ High School, was the Chief Guest. Other special guests included Nazmul Abedin Fahim, Director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and Syed Tasnim Mahmud Tushon, CEO and Founder of Green Buds, and former MGBSDC President, 2005-06.
Results and Recognition
The festival concluded with awards presented to the top teams across three categories:
High School Category
In the high school category, Ideal School and College, Dhaka secured the championship title after a series of intense debates. Adamjee Cantonment Public School claimed the runner-up position, while Motijheel Government Boys’ High School and Jatrabari Ideal School made it to the finals, showcasing remarkable performances.
College Category
At the college level, Adamjee Cantonment College emerged victorious, with St. Joseph College finishing as runner-up. Dhaka Residential Model College and Dhaka College also displayed impressive skills, earning their places as finalists.
University Segment
In the university segment, East West University triumphed as the overall champion, followed closely by North South University, which secured the runner-up spot. Islamic University of Technology, Gazipur, and Chattogram University advanced to the finals, demonstrating exceptional debating prowess.
A Celebration of Debate and Dialogue
The 18th National Debate Festival not only recognised exceptional debaters but also highlighted the importance of nurturing leadership and communication skills among students. The event underscored the enduring value of debate in shaping future leaders and fostering a culture of informed discourse.
As the festival concluded, organizers and participants expressed optimism for the continued growth of debate initiatives across educational institutions in Bangladesh.
