40 DU students awarded Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship

A total of 40 meritorious undergraduate students of the University of Dhaka (DU) have been awarded scholarships by Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, recognising academic excellence across different academic years and disciplines.

The scholarship cheques were formally handed over at a ceremony held on Monday at the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom. The event was graced by DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, as the Chief Guest.

Speaking at the programme, Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed expressed his gratitude to Sumitomo Corporation for supporting DU’s talented students. He noted that such initiatives would further strengthen the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Japan and congratulated the scholarship recipients on their achievements.

Mohammad Shafiullah, General Manager of the Corporate Division of Sumitomo Corporation, also addressed the event. The programme was conducted by Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, Acting Registrar of the University of Dhaka.

Scholarship Recipients
Students from Science, Social Sciences, Arts, Engineering, and Business disciplines were selected across all four academic years, reflecting the diversity of DU’s academic community.

  • First-year recipients: Applied Mathematics, Criminology, Psychology, Bangla, and Public Administration.
  • Second-year awardees: History, Statistics, International Relations, Banking and Insurance, and Applied Chemistry.
  • Third-year students: Computer Science and Engineering, Disaster Science and Climate Resilience, French Language and Culture, and Management Information Systems.
  • Final-year recipients: Nuclear Engineering, Japanese Studies, Law, Finance, Marketing, and Political Science.

University officials stated that the scholarship aims not only to ease financial pressure but also to inspire students to continue pursuing academic excellence and global engagement.
