BRAC University

Speakers at a memorial organised by BRAC University paid tribute to Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, describing him as an enlightened teacher who regarded education not merely as a profession but as a moral pursuit and human responsibility.

They said Professor Manzoorul believed that the true goal of education was not just to acquire information or degrees but to awaken knowledge, beauty, and values within learners—nurturing minds that are informed, humane, and socially conscious.

Widely known as SMI among students and colleagues, Professor Manzoorul was revered for his teaching, literary brilliance, and principled engagement with Bangladesh’s cultural and civic life. He passed away on 10 October 2025 while undergoing treatment at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka.

The memorial, held on 23 October by the Department of English and Humanities, honoured the life and work of the distinguished academic, who served as the department’s founding adviser and played a central role in designing its curriculum.

The event featured literary readings by students, along with performances by Associate Professor Asifa Sultana and Assistant Professor Syeda Farzana Sultana—both former students of Professor Manzoorul at the University of Dhaka who later became his colleagues. The duo rendered Rabindra Sangeet in remembrance of their mentor.

A video presentation compiled by Lecturer Shakika Rubaiat concluded the programme, urging the youth to follow in Professor Manzoorul’s footsteps and strive to leave a meaningful mark in the world.

Among those who spoke at the memorial were Rasheda K Chowdhury, member of BRAC University’s Board of Trustees; Professor Arshad Mahmud Chowdhury, Pro-Vice Chancellor; Professor Emeritus Manzoor Ahmed; and Md Golam Samdani Fakir, Director of the Learning and Teaching Innovation Centre.

The event was also attended by Professor Firdous Azim, Chairperson of the Department of English and Humanities; Professor Sabiha Huq; Zainab Farooqui Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Architecture; Tazin Aziz Choudhury, Chairperson of the Department of English at the University of Dhaka; Professor Tahmina Ahmed; academic and writer Professor Fakrul Alam; and researcher and journalist Afsan Chowdhury.

Speakers recalled his rare ability to inspire critical thought and compassion in equal measure, leaving an enduring legacy in Bangladesh’s intellectual and academic landscape.
