Eco Fighters of DIU win Bangladesh qualifier for SpoGomi World Cup

Eco Fighters from Daffodil International University have clinched the championship title in the SpoGomi World Cup 2025 Bangladesh qualifier, earning the honour of representing the country in the global finals to be held in Japan this October.

The Bangladesh entry into this global event was initiated by Abrar Hanif, founder of “One Bag Trash”. During his studies in China, Abrar was introduced to the SpoGomi movement through a friend. Inspired by the concept of combining sport with waste collection, he applied to represent Bangladesh and went through a rigorous selection process, including multiple interviews. His efforts secured Bangladesh’s first-ever invitation to the SpoGomi World Cup.

The qualifier, held at Sandhya Malati Ground in Uttara 18, drew more than 70 teams to compete in a unique challenge blending athleticism with environmental responsibility. Participants were tasked with collecting and classifying waste within one hour, followed by 20 minutes of sorting, with points awarded based on both the type and quantity of waste collected.

The winning trio- Md Imran Hossain (Innovation & Entrepreneurship), Md Jubaer Shake, and Md Tanvir (Computer Science & Engineering) stood out with their strategy, agility, and precision in waste classification, outpacing their competitors. Their teamwork demonstrated how determination and collaboration can transform waste into a story of success.

Originating in Japan, SpoGomi has turned litter-picking into a competitive sport where items such as cigarette butts, PET bottles, and cans carry different point values, testing participants’ speed, skill, and strategy.
