‘Community Liberty Action Day’ held at Jahangirnagar University
To promote youth engagement in freedom, civic rights, and policy innovation, a day-long event titled Community Liberty Action Day was held on Friday in the surrounding areas of Jahangirnagar University, Savar.
Throughout the day, students and young organisers engaged the public through open street debates, art and poster exhibitions, and leaflet distribution on economic and civic freedoms.
The initiative was part of the broader Liberty Hub Initiative, which aims to involve university students in policy innovation, public awareness, and civic participation.
Participants highlighted the importance of youth leadership in advancing the spirit of freedom and human rights in society. Many expressed their views on individual liberty, freedom of expression, and economic freedom through debates and creative displays.
The event was organised by Farzana Tayeeba, Md Niyaj Morshed, Md Arian Kabir, and Maksudur Rahman. The organisers announced that, as a continuation of this initiative, a Policy Hackathon will be held at the university next week. During the 48-hour event, students will design practical policy proposals addressing local issues such as waste management, student rights, and internet access. The best proposals will later be submitted to university and local government authorities.
A post-event survey indicated that participants’ understanding of civic and economic freedom increased by over 40 percent. At the end of the programme, a new Liberty Hub Student Committee was formed to sustain the movement and continue discussions, workshops, and research activities on liberty in and around Savar.
Organisers expressed optimism that such initiatives would enhance youth involvement in policymaking and deepen understanding of the values of liberty and civic responsibility in Bangladesh.
