On the occasion of Victory Day, a group of students of Dhaka University staged a symbolic programme by throwing shoes at a picture of Ghulam Azam, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader convicted of war crimes.
The programme was held in front of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) building at noon today (16 December).
The students chanted slogans such as “Pakistani collaborators, beware” and “There is no place in this Bengal for enemies of the Liberation War”.
Arif Faisal, one of the participants, said, “On 16 December 1971 the Bengali nation achieved statehood, but some people born in this country opposed the Liberation War and consistently portrayed it as an Indian conspiracy.
“We, the young generation, reject this distortion of history with hatred,” he said, adding that first-year students of Dhaka University organised the shoe-throwing programme on their own initiative to protest against anti-Liberation War forces.
Meanwhile, a similar programme was also held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) today.
A group of JU students staged an exhibition of photographs of collaborators and anti‑liberation figures and threw trash at them.
The programme, titled “Monument of Hatred,” was organised by students of the Department of Drama and Dramatics in front of the university’s old arts building.
