IUB commemorates first anniversary of July Movement

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) marked the first anniversary of the July Movement with a two-week series of student-led events, concluding on 4 August 2025 with a seminar and cultural programme.

The closing event featured Biplobi Protichhobi, a stage play performed by the IUB Theatre Club, followed by protest songs rendered by the IUB Music Club. Hip-hop groups 1230 Classicks, Ragemode, Coldkraft, and Shezan also took the stage with rap songs that rose to popularity during the 2024 movement.

Earlier that day, students from the Department of Media and Communication presented thesis papers at a seminar titled Digital Dissent and its Imaginaries, exploring critical reflections on online resistance.

From 2 to 4 August, a series of exhibitions were hosted across campus. The Independent Photography Club presented Born in July, showcasing photographs from the 2024 protests captured by student photographers. The Anthro-Socio Club arranged a meme exhibition titled Control+Alter+Rebel: Meme Voices of July, highlighting popular memes and cartoons from the movement. The IUB Literature Club curated the July Memorial Exhibition through Literary Pieces, and the Art Club organised an on-spot painting competition titled Reminiscing July.

On 31 July, student organisations Environmental Trailblazers and DEA-IUB jointly conducted a community clean-up drive in the Bashundhara Residential Area. The initiative was joined by IUB Board of Trustees Chairman Didar A. Husain and Vice Chancellor Prof M Tamim.

Earlier, a FIDE-rated chess tournament titled July Memorial was held on 25 July, attracting 160 student participants from various institutions. On 30 July, the final match of the inter-departmental futsal tournament was held as part of the commemorative series.
