North South University observes International Mother Language Day
On 21 February, marking International Mother Language Day, North South University (NSU) solemnly observed the historic occasion by paying tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
The university community gathered at the NSU Shaheed Minar early in the day to lay floral tributes and observe a moment of silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives to uphold the right to speak in Bangla. Students, faculty members and administrative officials participated in the programme, reflecting on the enduring significance of linguistic identity and cultural heritage.
In addition to the on-campus observance, a university delegation visited the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to pay homage to the martyrs. The delegation was led by Assistant Proctor Rakib Ahmed, who guided the tribute ceremony and emphasised the lasting relevance of the Language Movement in shaping the nation’s history.
Participants placed wreaths at the altar and stood in silent respect, commemorating the supreme sacrifice made for the recognition of Bangla as a state language. The observance highlighted the university’s commitment to preserving the spirit of Ekushey and honouring the values of linguistic diversity and freedom of expression.
Recognised globally by UNESCO, International Mother Language Day serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and promoting mother languages worldwide. Through its commemorative activities, North South University reaffirmed its respect for the martyrs and its dedication to upholding the cultural and historical legacy of the Language Movement.
