NSU celebrates graduation of more than 3,000 students at 26th convocation
North South University (NSU) organised its 26th convocation ceremony on 7 January 2026 at the NSU campus. A total of 3,322 students, comprising undergraduate and graduate candidates, were awarded degrees at the ceremony.
Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, adviser to the Ministry of Education, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, attended the programme as the convocation chair. SMA Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, was present as the convocation speaker, while Mohammad Anwar Hossen, member of the UGC, attended as special guest.
Also present at the ceremony were Aziz Al Kaiser, chairman of the board of trustees of NSU; M A Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Mohammed Shajahan, Yasmin Kamal, Rehana Rahman, Duluma Ahmed, members of the board of trustees; Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of NSU; Nasar Uddin Ahmed, pro vice-chancellor; and Abdur Rob Khan, treasurer of NSU, along with deans, faculty members, officials and graduating students.
The ceremony began with a recitation from the Holy Quran followed by the national anthem. Convocation marshal Md Mamun Molla, professor of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at NSU, delivered the welcome address, greeting distinguished guests, faculty members and graduates.
Speaking on the occasion, Aziz Al Kaiser said, “Today is a moment of pride and hope. The future is now yours. Lead with integrity and empathy, stay true to your roots, and serve humanity with hope as you pursue a meaningful and fulfilling life.”
Convocation speaker SMA Faiz congratulated the graduates and said, “This is where your minds were trained, your character was shaped, and your imagination broadened to meet expectations. Today, the world stands before you and at your fingertips.”
Following the remarks, the deans of NSU’s four schools—AKM Waresul Karim, dean of the School of Business and Economics; Md Rizwanul Islam, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; Shazzad Hosain, dean of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences; and Dipak Kumar Mitra, dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences—presented the degree candidates to the convocation chair. Degrees were formally conferred by Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar.
Two students received the chancellor’s gold medal, while eight students were awarded the vice-chancellor’s gold medal. Mahira Islam Asfie, bachelor of pharmacy professional, received the chancellor’s gold medal for the undergraduate programme, while Mehrub Mobin Bhuiyan, master of business administration, received the chancellor’s gold medal for the graduate programme.
Recipients of the vice-chancellor’s gold medal from the undergraduate programme were Jemima Sharmin Lamiya (BA in English), Humaira Anjum Orchi (BBA), Rashik Iram Chowdhury (BSc in computer science and engineering), and Tasnim Jahan (BSc in biochemistry and biotechnology).
From the graduate programme, the vice-chancellor’s gold medals were awarded to Tasbir Raihan (executive master’s in policy and governance), Nusrat Jahan Lepee (MBA), Tabassum Haidary (MS in electronics and telecommunication engineering), and Tasmim Abu Saleh (MS in biotechnology).
Following the award distribution, valedictorian Mahira Islam Asfie delivered her speech, urging fellow graduates to carry forward their values alongside their degrees to serve humanity and make a meaningful difference.
Special guest Mohammad Anwar Hossen congratulated the graduates on behalf of the UGC and said the milestone reflected years of dedication and academic effort.
Vice-chancellor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said graduating more than 3,300 students was a proud moment for NSU, adding that graduates carry both responsibility and opportunity to contribute to the country’s future.
In his closing remarks, convocation chair Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar said education should serve not only personal advancement but also the broader public good, urging graduates to use their knowledge with integrity and social responsibility.
The first day of the two-day convocation programme concluded with a cultural programme.
