SUST expels 25 students over ragging incidents

Twenty-five students from two departments of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet have been expelled on charges of ragging. Among them, one student has been expelled for life, while 24 others received expulsions of varying durations.
Confirming the matter on Tuesday (30 September), SUST Pro-Vice Chancellor Sajedul Karim said, “The decision was taken at the 237th syndicate meeting of the university held last Thursday.”
According to university authorities, Fahim Muntasir, a second-year economics student, was expelled for life over allegations of subjecting students to mental harassment in a mess last year. Another economics student, Junayed Mustafiz Ayon, has been expelled for four semesters. Students Sharifuzzaman Khan Atif, Sabid Abrar Tajim, Anik Ahmed, Pritam Saha, Suel Rana, Jubayer Hossain Talukder Jim, Md Nayeem Mia, Bikash Chandra Dhar, and Minya Mohammad Sayyadul Bashar Rifat have each been expelled for two semesters.

Among them, Kazi Tasmia Haque Orisha was expelled for four semesters, while the other four — Farzana Meherun Nuhya, Tasmiyah Alam Maisha, Lamia Ismail Jui, and Sraboni Dey Priya — were expelled from residential halls for life. The university clarified that even if they are not currently in residence, they will remain permanently ineligible for hall seats. They have also been asked to submit undertakings to the proctorial body pledging not to engage in ragging in the future.
Additionally, over a ragging incident in a mess on 14 November, two statistics students, Md Sagor Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain, were expelled for two semesters. Six others from the same department, Shibraj Tripura, Jubayer Abdullah, Riadus Salehin Riyan, Tanmoy Karmakar Sagor, Yazuddin Patwari, and Nafis Imtiaz Ruhan, were permanently expelled from residential halls.
