From SSC setback to PhD in Cyberspace Engineering: The incredible journey of a Bangladeshi youth

In a story of remarkable resilience, a young man from Lakshmipur, who once scored a discouraging 3.88 GPA on his SSC exams with a ‘C’ grade in English, has defied all odds to pursue a fully-funded PhD in Cyberspace Engineering at Louisiana Tech University in the United States. His journey from a village school to a cutting-edge American research lab is serving as a powerful beacon of hope for students disheartened by their own academic results.
This inspirational story begins in 2008, a year that he remembers as being defined by disappointment. While his peers celebrated top grades, he was left with a result that made admission into a good college seem like an impossible dream.
“It felt like a final verdict on my future,” he shared with this reporter. “The family pressure and societal judgment were immense. I was pushed towards a polytechnic institute, which at the time, felt like a step down.”
However, it was at this low point that he made a life-altering decision. Instead of succumbing to despair, he chose to harness the negativity around him. “My philosophy became simple: convert humiliation into horsepower,” he explained. “The more people doubted me, the harder I worked to prove them wrong—and to prove myself right.”
This newfound determination propelled him forward. He excelled in his Diploma in Engineering, securing the second position in his class. He then pursued a bachelor’s degree in an evening programme at the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) while simultaneously working on his weaknesses. He joined debate clubs to overcome his shyness and took free government IT courses to build practical skills, all while battling his “greatest demon”—the English language.
The first major turning point came in 2021 when he was awarded the prestigious ICCR scholarship to pursue his Master’s in India. At Delhi Technological University (DTU), he not only conquered his academic challenges but also published three international research papers, a significant achievement that bolstered his confidence.
After returning to Bangladesh and working at a top media house, Channel i, he set his sights on his ultimate goal: a PhD from a US university. In 2024, his persistence paid off with multiple offers, including a fully-funded position at Louisiana Tech University, where he is now conducting research on Post-Quantum Cybersecurity and Blockchain.
His message to the students who recently received their SSC results is direct and heartfelt. “Your exam result is a snapshot in time, not your life sentence,” he advises. “Your real strength lies in how you respond to failure. Identify your weaknesses, but double down on your strengths. That is your path forward. If a boy from a tin-roofed school can make it this far, anyone can.”
As thousands of students navigate their own feelings of disappointment, this young researcher’s journey is a powerful reminder that the path to success is rarely a straight line but is always paved with resilience and the courage to write your own triumphant story.
