The interim government plans to transfer the printing and distribution of primary-level textbooks from the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) to the Directorate of Primary Education.

This information comes amid ongoing discussions about changes in textbook management, as confirmed by ministry officials. Reported by Prothom Alo.

In preparation for this handover, ministry officials note that amendments to the NCTB Act 2018 are being drafted. These changes could take effect from the 2027 academic year. While NCTB will continue to develop curricula and handle secondary-level textbooks, its primary curriculum staff will be deputed from the Directorate, signifying a shift in operational roles.

Supporters of the transfer expect this change to reduce delays and enhance quality, while critics caution that it may create coordination challenges. For example, Professor Tariq Monjur of Dhaka University noted that reducing NCTB’s role could negatively affect the education sector.
