Pixar is returning to one of its most beloved worlds, as a third film in the ‘Monsters, Inc.’ franchise is officially in development.
The project was revealed in a recent profile examining the studio’s future plans as Pixar prepares to release its newest animated adventure, ‘Hoppers’. While details about the upcoming sequel remain tightly under wraps, it marks another major return to the monster-powered universe first introduced in 2001.
The original Monsters, Inc., directed by Pete Docter and starring the voices of John Goodman and Billy Crystal, followed the city of Monstropolis, where monsters generate energy by scaring children. The film became a huge global hit, earning more than $528 million at the box office. Its 2013 prequel, ‘Monsters University’, proved even more successful, grossing $743 million worldwide and expanding the franchise’s popularity.
Pixar has not yet announced a director or storyline for the third instalment. Alongside the sequel, the studio is developing several original projects, including ‘Ono Ghost Market’, inspired by Asian supernatural myths, and its first-ever animated musical from ‘Turning Red’ director Domee Shi.
