The release of Scream 7 has pushed the Scream franchise into rare territory. For the first time since it began terrifying audiences in the mid-1990s, the long-running slasher series has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office; an achievement only a handful of horror properties can claim.
Fuelled by a strong opening that pulled in close to $100 million worldwide, Scream 7 tipped the franchise’s combined earnings past $1.009 billion. While newer entries have helped keep Ghostface relevant for a new generation, the original 1996 film remains the series’ single biggest earner, proving just how lasting its impact has been on pop culture and the genre itself.
That milestone places Scream alongside horror heavyweights such as The Conjuring Universe, Alien, Resident Evil, IT and Saw; a small, elite club built on decades of scares, reinvention and devoted fanbases.
Nearly 30 years after its debut, Scream has evolved from a self-aware slasher into a full-blown box office juggernaut. And with Scream 7 still playing in cinemas there’s a good chance Ghostface’s biggest kill yet, the box office, isn’t finished just yet
