For anyone hoping to study abroad, knowing the local language is always an advantage when it comes to looking for part time work or for effective communication. However, since Japan is not an English-speaking country, there are certain precautionary measures that some scholarships and universities have taken to ensure that the students applying at least have a working knowledge of Japanese.

For Bangladeshi students interested in pursuing studies in Japan, JLPT N3 proficiency can be a significant advantage, particularly for programmes that are taught in Japanese and for obtaining scholarships. While several universities in Japan offer English-taught programmes where JLPT N3 proficiency may not be required, many institutions offering Japanese-taught programmes will expect students to have a proficiency level of at least JLPT N3. This proficiency level ensures that students can manage academic coursework, engage in classroom discussions, and navigate daily life in Japan with relative ease. 

Top tier universities such as the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University, and others in Japan often expect this level of proficiency for programmes taught in Japanese, particularly for graduate students. 

Scholarships mentioned previously such as MEXT, JASSO, Nitori, and university-specific funding opportunities often expect or prefer candidates with JLPT N3 or higher, especially if the programme involves Japanese-language instruction.

Also, for students who aim to work part-time or intern while studying in Japan, JLPT N3 is often required for many jobs, especially in industries where communication with customers, clients, or co-workers in Japanese is necessary. Without JLPT N3, students may find themselves restricted to a limited range of jobs, typically those that don’t require direct interaction with Japanese speakers, such as roles in international companies or English-language teaching. However, these opportunities might not always be enough to cover living expenses.

As discussed earlier, the scholarships are typically highly competitive and for Master’s and Phd students, it might be a great advantage if one has JLPT N3 proficiency.

In Bangladesh, students who wish to take the JLPT N3 proficiency test can do so through the Japan Foundation, which organises the JLPT at various locations.
