Beyond the Classroom: Samiul Alam Shajal and the BAIRD vision
In a time when technology is shaping every part of our lives, a young individual in Bangladesh is stepping forward to create meaningful change, Samiul Alam Shajal. A student, innovator and founder who is working to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity through his initiative, the BAIRD Foundation.
Samiul Alam Shajal comes from a diverse background, combining experience in technology, media and business. Originally from Cumilla, he is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Asia Pacific.
The idea behind the BAIRD Foundation came from a clear observation of the gap in society. Samiul says, “The idea of the BAIRD Foundation came from seeing how many talented people lack proper guidance and access to opportunities in, but not limited to, AI and research and development.” He adds, “The main problem I aimed to solve was the gap between potential and opportunity in the tech and research field.”
This vision developed over time. He explains, “I believe Bangladeshi people have great potential, especially in technology and seeing other countries’ success makes me feel we should do the same.” He further adds, “Progress starts when someone takes the first step.” Samiul also highlighted a national concern, saying he wants to reduce technological dependency and move towards self-reliance.
The founding members of this foundation include students from EEE, CSE, Physics and Chemistry. This diversity allows them to approach problems from different perspectives while working towards a common goal.
So, what is BAIRD Foundation?
The BAIRD Foundation is built with a clear purpose and structure. As Samiul describes, “The BAIRD Foundation is dedicated to empowering individuals by providing access to opportunities, guidance and resources in AI and research & development.” The foundation’s work spans multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, technology and social development. Samiul says, “The core purpose of AI is to advance technology and drive innovation for the betterment of humanity.” However, according to him, technology plays a vital role in improving society, especially in areas like education and healthcare, where it can create the most impact.
At present, the foundation is actively working on different projects. Samiul confirms, “BAIRD Foundation is actively working on projects, especially student-focused programmes.” Among its current initiatives are Language AI & Generative Systems, AI-powered drone technology and the Bangla Technology & Digital Sovereignty Division. Other than that, one of the foundation’s important programmes is designed to guide learners from basics to real-world application. Samiul explains, “The Zero to One Programme focuses on building strong fundamentals in programming, mathematics and problem-solving,” while “the Research Operations provide a platform where these skills are applied to real-world problems.”
Although still in its early stages, the foundation has already made progress. Samiul shares, “In a short span of time, we have already achieved three significant milestones which may be among the first of their kind in South Asia.” He adds that these will be announced soon through an official announcement and a press briefing.
For young people, the foundation offers direct opportunities. As Samiul explains, “The foundation offers opportunities for youth and students through structured learning programmes, research involvement and hands-on project experiences.” These opportunities allow them to build skills, gain practical experience and grow as future innovators and researchers. There are also plans for financial support. He mentions, “We are planning to introduce two types of scholarships,” including support for students who excel and those who face financial challenges. In addition, a research and innovation scholarship is also being considered.
Students can take part in different ways. Samiul says, “Young people, especially students, can get involved with the foundation by participating in our programmes, training sessions and research initiatives.” He encourages them to actively engage with their initiatives and take part in building innovative solutions for real-world problems. The foundation also ensures work benefits.
Looking ahead, the long-term vision is ambitious. Shajal states, “Our long-term vision is to ensure that all our work is used for the betterment of humanity.” At the same time, he emphasises the importance of independence, aiming for technological independence as a nation. The importance of such an initiative in Bangladesh is significant. With a large youth population, the country holds great potential.
Such meaningful progress begins with initiative and through efforts like the BAIRD Foundation.
