Dhaka is an expensive city to live in. On top of that, if you are a student, you are most probably always on a fixed budget. Even during Eid, you have to be careful with your spending and shopping on a limited budget can be quite challenging. Here are few spots in Dhaka that can be a great solution for students who are looking for some affordable options:
Mirpur-10: To be a little bit more specific, Mirpur-10 roundabout is a great place for budget shopping. There are loads of street stalls on all sides of the roundabout. Clothes, shoes and accessories, all can be found here. If you need electronics and other accessories, you can just slip into the Shah-Ali-Market situated right on the side of the roundabout. Even though shoes are available here, clothing stalls are the ones that dominate.
Farmgate: One of the busiest places in Dhaka which is always crowded, Farmgate, offers a number of options for shopping. You could take a peek inside the Farm View Supermarket and you may find the prices to be fairly reasonable but if that seem high to you, street shopping is the answer. Across the road from Ananda Cinema Hall at Farmgate, you will find stalls of shoes as well as clothes. The clothing stalls expand all the way to Tejgaon college but the shoe stalls are limited to Farmgate bus stand. Whether you need a sandal, casual shoes or even formal ones, this can be your solution within budget.
Newmarket: As difficult as it is to bargain at Newmarket, it’s still one of your best choices for shopping. Inside the shopping mall and outside, on the streets, there are way too many shops so browsing won’t be a problem. With some careful bargaining, you can easily get a great deal on jeans, shirts and dresses as well. If you are into t-shirts or even jerseys, those are available here. However, for shoes and accessories, the street stalls are a better option. Not only are there more options at the street stalls but it’s easier to bargain with them as well.
Nurjahan Super Market: For those who are not familiar with this place, it’s across the street from Dhaka College. Just like Newmarket, there are a lot of shops both inside the market and outside on the streets. Inside, it will feel like a maze but they have a rich collection so whatever you are looking for, it is unlikely that you will be disappointed. The asking prices might seem high but those who can negotiate will secure a good deal. Try not to be overwhelmed since there are a lot of shops and every retailer will be calling you as you walk inside.
Bongo Bazar: Albeit a wholesale market, but anyone can shop here. Essentially located in old Dhaka, Bongo Bazar is one of the largest markets in the country. For clothing items, this place can offer you more options than you can browse. However, it is highly recommended that you browse a few shops and get an idea about the price before you actually start purchasing, otherwise you won’t get your money’s worth. Try to approach this market with an open mind and you will be pleasantly surprised. It is highly recommended that you have an hour or two on your hand if you are here.
Remember, the trick to shopping on a budget is knowing where to shop and knowing how to bargain. Street shopping is never easy, specially not in Dhaka. One slip of the tongue and you can be losing money. So, it is a wise idea to take a friend with you when you are shopping so you don’t get overwhelmed. Besides, a friend can always help you pick a dress when you are confused with too many options.
