Should you choose to work at a local firm, or MNC?

Well, if you’re an undergraduate student, you must have had this conversation, or at least this thought, once. Undoubtedly, the demand for working at a multinational firm is much higher, considering the remuneration packages, technology offerings, exposure, and many other benefits.

Nevertheless, local conglomerates are not very much behind in this game. Some of the renowned local companies are enhancing the recruitment standards, offering better packages, and leveling up. Let’s jump into elaborated comparisons.

First of all, working in a multinational means that employees are very much replaceable. The performance KPIs are very specifically metrics-driven. Even today, in many cases, the top management is run by expats.

Then comes the working process, which is slow. Be it your idea or a project you want to implement, although it’s good to be process-driven, you might need a lot of time before it’s finally approved by headquarters or top management.

Now let’s talk about the challenges of a local firm. It is very common that you might get stuck in the middle of office politics hierarchical issues. There is a limited budget for marketing, recruitment, and other projects which might limit your possibilities of ideation and implementation. Last but not least, you might not get as many benefits as you would get in a multinational, be it dedicated private transport, abroad trips, etc.

The question is not about which one is better, the question is about which one you believe you’re suited for.

Think of the cultural compatibility of the organization first. Are you ready to stay out of your city and work? Do you prefer a high salary, slower decision making, or moderate salary, fast decision making? Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Do you have an adequate network in the MNCs your shortlisted, or the local ones?

Choose the sector first. Choose the culture. Ask around people who already work at your preferred places, to know if you’d be a good fit.
