The Fulbright Program offers scholarships for Master’s and PhD studies, as well as Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) positions, in the United States. They encourage applications from everyone, especially those with disabilities. The program is managed by the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka. This is a great opportunity to study or teach in the USA with financial support and cultural exchange. The Fulbright program provides J-1 visa sponsorship, a health benefit plan, and enrichment activities. It’s important to note that you must apply from Bangladesh and cannot hold U.S. citizenship.

Application requirements:

Must reside in Bangladesh at the time of application.

Must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a good academic record by the program start date.

Must not hold U.S. citizenship (dual citizens are ineligible).

Language criteria:

Must be fluent in English, demonstrated by:

TOEFL (Paper-based): 550 or higher.TOEFL (Internet-based – iBT): 79-80 or higher.

IELTS (Overall Score): 6.5 or higher.

To send your official scores to IIE, use institutional code 2326 when taking the TOEFL test.

Application process

1. Check the U.S. Embassy website

Visit the official U.S. Embassy in Dhaka website or the Fulbright page to check for the official call for applications.

The application deadline for 2026-27 session is 31 July, 2025

2. Create an online account

Go to the Embark/Fulbright online application portal. A specific link for Bangladesh is provided in the call for applications. You’ll create an account and start filling out the application form.

3. Prepare the required documents

Academic transcripts and certificates (English translated if necessary)

Updated CV/resume

Statement of Purpose (why you want the degree and how it benefits Bangladesh)

Study/Research Objectives

Three Recommendation Letters (academic and professional)Valid passport scan

TOEFL scores (you can submit without it initially but must submit it later)

4. Shortlisting and interview

If your application is shortlisted, you’ll be contacted for an interview at the U.S. Embassy. This is usually held around June–July. The interview panel evaluates your academic goals, leadership potential, communication skills, and commitment to returning to Bangladesh.

5. TOEFL test

Once selected, you’ll be advised to take the TOEFL iBT test if you haven’t already. The U.S. Embassy may cover the test cost for final nominees.

6. University placement

You don’t need to apply to U.S. universities yourself. If you are selected as a Fulbright nominee, the Institute of International Education (IIE) will place you in U.S. universities based on your field and preferences.

7. Final approval & visa process

Once placed and all documents are cleared, you’ll receive a J-1 visa sponsorship, orientation sessions, and guidance on travel. You typically depart for the U.S. in August–September the following year.
