Victoria University of Wellington: Tongarewa International Scholarship
Overview
The Tongarewa International Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship offered by Victoria University of Wellington to celebrate their international student community. It provides partial tuition fee support for one year of undergraduate or postgraduate study.
Eligibility
- Open to international students paying full international fees.
- Applicable to first-year undergraduate or entering postgraduate students.
Ineligibility
- Students who completed secondary education in New Zealand.
- Students who completed English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme at Victoria University.
- Study Abroad or Twinning students from partner universities.
- Students in their second year of the same degree programme at Victoria University.
Value and Tenure
- Varies between NZ$5,000 for Masters Degree with 9 sscholarships and;
- NZ$10,000 for Undergraduate Degree with 10 scholarships;
- Awarded for one year of study.
Application Process
- Applications are typically open one month before the closing date.

Deadline for applications:
- Trimester 3, 2024: 1 August 2024
Submit a complete online application by 4:30pm on the closing date.
Required documents:
- Personal statement (500 words) outlining academic goals, reasons for choosing Victoria University, and why you deserve the scholarship. Include leadership positions and community involvement details.
- Full transcripts and relevant qualification documents.
- Offer of place (conditional or unconditional) from Victoria University.
Selection process
A panel of Wellington University International staff will select recipients.
Additional information
- Scholarship is for partial tuition fees, credited after the final withdrawal date of the awarded trimester.
- Guaranteed offer of residence placement upon receiving the scholarship (requires a separate application to University Accommodation Wellington by their deadline).
- May be held in conjunction with other awards.
Regulations and conditions
- Late or incomplete applications will be rejected.
- Requires full enrollment in a full-year programme for the entire scholarship tenure.
- Scholarship cannot be deferred.
- May require partial repayment if the recipient withdraws or fails to maintain satisfactory progress.
- Recipients are expected to act as university ambassadors if requested.
