This will be the fifth straight season the sides meet in the knockout stages and their sixth meeting since the 2019/20 campaign.

Since City first appeared in the Champions League in the 2011/12 season, the two clubs have faced each other 15 times, with five wins each, which shows the epic rivalry between them.

Pep Guardiola’s side have had a mixed European campaign overall. Despite defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Bodo/Glimt, City still managed to finish in the top eight, securing an automatic place in the Round of 16.

The match will also mark a personal milestone for Guardiola. The City manager will take charge of his 190th Champions League game, equalling Alex Ferguson’s record in the competition. Only Carlo Ancelotti (218) has managed more matches in Europe’s elite tournament.

However, Real Madrid’s side is largely dominated by injury problems.

The biggest concern surrounds Kylian Mbappé, who has missed the last three matches with a knee injury. While there is hope he could return for the second leg, his availability for the first encounter remains uncertain.

Jude Bellingham also has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained earlier this year, while absentees Eder Militao and Dani Ceballos also remain unavailable.  Rodrygo is sidelined with a crucial ligament injury, and Alvaro Carreras continues recovery from a calf issue.

Kylian Mbappe will miss this match as well due to his knee injury and might also miss the second leg, though Real remain hopeful that he will recover soon. David Alaba is nursing a muscle issue and will not be fit to feature against Manchester City. Jude Bellingham is also a major doubt, while Rodrygo, Álvaro Carreras, Éder Militão and Dani Ceballos are all ruled out.

Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono have been declared fit for this match and might be involved if Alvaro Arbeloa decides.  Eduardo Camavinga is a minor doubt, but may even start if he is declared fit to play, while Vinicius Junior is expected to lead the attack.

Their recent domestic form has also been inconsistent. Madrid have lost two of their recent La Liga fixtures against Celta Vigo after suffering back-to-back league defeats against Osasuna and Getafe for the first time since October 2018. Despite the injury setbacks,  their pedigree in Europe means they can not be ruled out.

Meanwhile, City will arrive in excellent form, Guardiola’s men have won nine of their last eleven matches in all competitions and remain in contention for multiple trophies this season. They sit seven points behind Arsenal in the Premier League with a game in hand, while also reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals and the EFL Cup final.

City’s injury list is also relatively small. Joško Gvardiol and Mateo Kovačić remain unavailable due to long-term issues, although Kovačić has returned to training. Guardiola confirmed there are no new injury concerns ahead of the European clash.

Erling Haaland, who was rested as a precaution over the weekend, is expected to start and remains City’s biggest attacking threat after scoring seven goals in eight Champions League matches this season.

City’s squad depth has allowed Guardiola to rotate heavily in recent weeks, ensuring key players such as Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias arrive fresh for the Bernabéu showdown.

The two teams faced each other earlier in the league phase of this campaign, when Manchester City secured a 2–1 win at the Bernabéu, thanks to goals from Nico O’Reilly and Haaland.

Prediction

Heading into the round-of-16 ties, City have scored more goals from open-play sequences. By contrast, no side has scored more goals following direct attacks than Madrid (four – level with Benfica), and they also rank first for direct attacks that end in a shot or a touch in the opposition’s box (31).  Also, these kinds of games are won on very tight margins, where two goalkeepers of the teams will play the anchor role. Both teams have two elite goalkeepers, in good form.

With Real Madrid dealing with several injuries, most notably to Kylian Mbappé, and struggling for consistency, Pep Guardiola’s side may hold the advantage heading into the first leg. That said, facing Real Madrid is never straightforward; their rich history in European competitions ensures a closely fought contest. Still, Manchester City could have the final say in this encounter.
