Shamit Shome, a Canadian-based midfielder, arrived in Dhaka this morning (4 June) ahead of his anticipated debut for Bangladesh in their Asian Cup Qualifier against Singapore on 10 June.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) posted photos of Shamit arriving in Dhaka on Facebook today saying, “Welcome, Shamit Shome!”

The 26-year-old, born to Sylheti parents, will be in attendance at the Bangabandhu National Stadium tonight to watch the FIFA friendly between Bangladesh and Bhutan, marking his first public appearance in the country since his call-up.

Shome’s inclusion in the 26-member preliminary squad signals a new chapter in Bangladesh’s midfield rebuild—a process that took flight with the arrival of Hamza Choudhury earlier this year.

With nearly a decade of experience in Canada’s top-flight football, Shome’s addition is seen as a valuable addition to the team. The Cavalry FC midfielder is expected to bring attacking impetus to the side.

As the clock ticks down to the must-win tie against Singapore, Bangladesh’s midfield unit, now reinforced, appears much prepared.
