19 students punished, 2 expelled from CVASU over ragging incidents

Nineteen students of Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) have been subjected to various disciplinary actions, including temporary and permanent expulsion from university dormitories and financial penalties, in connection with multiple incidents of ragging.
Additionally, two students have had their studentship permanently revoked for their roles in physically and mentally harassing junior students.
Khalilur Rahman, senior deputy director of the university’s Public Relations and Publications Department, confirmed the matter through a press release issued today (5 July).
The university took the decision following the 13th meeting of the Student Discipline Committee, held on 29 June at the university’s administrative building, chaired by CVASU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Lutfor Rahman.
The committee reviewed the cases based on the severity of disciplinary violations.
According to the statement, one case involved the physical and mental harassment of a first-year student from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, enrolled in the 2023–2024 academic session.
In this incident, second-year student Mirza Mahfuz Hasan Akash was permanently expelled from the university dormitory and fined Tk10,000. Another student, Md Jaber, received a one-year hall expulsion and was fined Tk5,000.
Additionally, Md Rashid Shabab Shuvo, Tanzim Md Siam Iqbal, and Md Mehedi Hasan were each suspended from the hall for six months and fined Tk3,000.
In another incident, eight newly admitted students were subjected to ragging and physical and mental abuse by second-year students of the Faculty of Fisheries. As a result, student Md Touhidul Islam Shihab was permanently expelled from the university hall and fined Tk10,000.
Two others — Md Sajed-ul-Islam Sifat and Md Shahedul Islam — were suspended from the hall for six months and fined Tk5,000 and Tk3,000 respectively.
Ten other second-year Fisheries students — Safat Ullah Julian, Md Mostakim Hossain Riyad, Asfi Al Hasan, Md Ilyas Al Jaber, Taidul Islam Topu, Md Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Najmus Sadat Touhidi, Abul Hasan Fahat, Md Shahrokh Khan, and Md Bolol Hossain — were each suspended from their dormitories for six months and received formal warning notices.
In a separate decision, Md Royazul Jannah Wasi, another second-year student from the Faculty of Fisheries, was permanently banned from entering the university hall.
Additionally, two post-graduate students were expelled from the university entirely and had their studentships revoked following separate incidents. According to an earlier investigation report, one student was physically assaulted in Room 418 of the Bir Muktijoddha Abdullah Al Noman Hall on 1 August 2023. Another student was attacked and injured in the TV room on the night of 19 November same year.
Based on the findings and their failure to respond to show-cause notices, the 11th meeting of the Student Discipline Committee on 18 March 2025, held them guilty of misconduct.
As a result, MS students Abhishek Nandi (Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology) and Md Ashikul Islam Rana (Animal Science and Nutrition) were permanently expelled and barred from pursuing any further education at CVASU in the future.
