Nine garment workers employed in various factories of Team Group have been given the opportunity to pursue higher education at the Asian University for Women (AUW) in Chattogram, with supports form local business conglomerate and US-based brand Inditex.

The workers are Nishat Anjum Nijhum, Sumaiya Akter, Sumaiya Misu, Mousume Akter, Nipa Moni Akter, Mumtarin Ferdous, Trisha Moni, Tania Akther, and Sumaiya Khatun. They were previously employed as workers and quality inspectors in Team Group factories.

According to a press release, the workers had completed their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. However, after that, they dropped out to take on family responsibilities and entered the workforce. Graduation had been their cherished dream, which they thought would never come true.

“Their dream came true when Team Group announced Inditex scholarships for its female workers to study at AUW. Through examinations, they were found eligible for the undergraduate program. Team Group facilitated the entire assessment process and guided them throughout the examination period,” it added.

Rubana Haq, Vice Chancellor of AUW, confirmed the development to The Business Standard.

The students have already begun their classes at AUW. They enrolled in a five-year program—two years of foundation courses followed by a three-year undergraduate degree. During this period, Inditex will cover their tuition fees, lodging, food, and also provide a monthly stipend to support their families.

A senior official of Team Group told TBS, “During their studies, the workers will continue to receive their monthly salaries with the support of Inditex.”

Deputy Managing Director of Team Group Abdullah Hil Nakib said, “I truly hope to see them succeed in the coming years. I also wish to see all of them shine as stars in the limitless sky of Team Group.”

He added, “When these individuals complete their degrees and return to Team Group, they will not go back to the same positions they left. Rather, they will return as officers, managers, and leaders. This is what empowerment looks like when it moves beyond words into transformative action.”
