BUET students issue statement in light of recent rape of an 8 year old and other crime spike

We joined the July movement with the dream of a non-discriminatory society where everyone would have the right to live with dignity. However, the most unfortunate reality is that the women and children of this country are the main victims of the fragile law and order situation that has emerged after the fall of the autocracy. We are deeply concerned to observe that the number of rapes and violence against women has increased alarmingly in the country. More than 50 rape cases have been reported in the last month, and even our children are not spared from this horrific situation. The most terrible addition to this list is the rape of an 8-year-old child who was visiting her sister’s house in Magura. We are responsible for the child’s cries and every wound on her body; as a nation, we are ashamed in this situation.

Our women were one of the main partners in the fall of the autocracy. They came to the streets in July, overcoming various social obstacles, and their voices became the voice of this movement. But today, they are not safe on the streets, and their strong voices have turned into cries. The interim government’s actions to ensure women’s safety are not visible or satisfactory.

Historically, women in this country have been victims of discrimination and oppression. Due to various social barriers, most victims of oppression do not want to seek legal assistance. Moreover, due to abuse of power, administrative inaction, and lengthy trials, it is not possible to ensure justice. In this situation, the government’s inactive stance in the face of one rape and oppression incident after another has disappointed us. This indifference of the administration and the culture of impunity are allowing criminals to get away, and society is becoming unsafe for women.

We believe that every person in Bangladesh has the right to live with dignity without fear. Therefore, we are united against rape and oppression, and our position is firm in demanding the harshest punishment for rapists. We demand:

The country’s rape law must be amended to ensure that rape punishments are enforced quickly through fast-track tribunals.
The perpetrators of the child rape in Magura must be given exemplary punishment under this new law as quickly as possible.
Those accused in all recent incidents of violence against women in the country must be brought under the law quickly.
Necessary steps must be taken to expedite the legal process and judicial proceedings in cases of violence against women.
The process of legal aid and justice must be made women-friendly.
Above all, the government’s steps to ensure women’s safety at home, outside, and everywhere must be visible and effective.
