Education committee proposes limiting public exams to five core subjects
A government-appointed committee has recommended limiting public examinations at the secondary level to a few core competency-based subjects.
Rather than all subjects, the committee recommends taking exams on Bangla, English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
According to a report by Prothom Alo, the committee also advised retaining the cancellation of the Grade 8 public examination, including JSC, and discontinuing the junior scholarship exam.
It recommended a unified curriculum up to Grade 10, with academic streams such as Science, Humanities and Business Studies introduced only from Grade 11.
The report emphasised skill-based, application-oriented assessment, stronger classroom learning, expanded use of digital technology, and year-round co-curricular activities.
It further proposed shifting the academic year to September–June, recognising education as a fundamental right, and gradually decentralising secondary education through district-level authorities.
The report was submitted to the Education Ministry on 10 February.
