World Chess Champion D Gukesh (19) claimed his first-ever classical win over five-time champion and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen (34) during the Norway Chess 2025 tournament on Sunday (2 June), on Carlsen’s home turf. The victory came just days after Gukesh lost to Carlsen in the opening round.

Hindustan Times reported that in a rare show of frustration, Carlsen reportedly slammed the table before regaining composure, patting Gukesh on the back and offering an apology. “Ninety-nine out of a hundred times I’d lose. Just a lucky day,” Gukesh humbly told Chess24 in a post-match interview.

Gukesh’s win sent shockwaves through the global chess community, drawing widespread acclaim on social media. Fans hailed it as a defining moment in the young grandmaster’s rising career.
