A local leader of Jatiotabadi Jubodal has been expelled after a video of him wielding a machete during a clash at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) went viral.
Mahbubur Rahman, vice president of the Daulatpur Thana unit of Jubodal’s Khulna district branch, was seen attacking students during the confrontation on 18 February. His expulsion was confirmed in a press release by Nurul Islam Sohail, office secretary of the party’s central executive committee.
The KUET clash erupted when a Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal campaign on campus led to protests from students opposing political activities. The situation escalated into a violent confrontation, injuring at least 30 people. Students have since locked up the vice-chancellor’s office and announced a class and exam boycott until their five-point demand, including a ban on student politics, is met.
