Jucsu polls: Writ filed seeking reinstatement of Amartya's candidacy, not postponement of election

Amartya Roy John, a vice-president (VP) candidate from the “Sampritir Oikya” panel in the upcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) election, has refuted media reports claiming he filed a writ petition in the High Court to halt the polls.
Speaking to The Business Standard today (8 September), he said the reports are “completely baseless”.
He added that if he files a writ, it would be to reinstate his candidacy, not to suspend or foil the election.
Meanwhile, in a statement today, Sampritir Oikya also clarified that no writ has been filed to halt the Jucsu polls and announced that a writ petition to reinstate Amratya’s candidacy would be filed shortly.
After the filing, Amartya’s lawyer, Manzur Al Matin, will brief journalists at the High Court.
The panel urged everyone not to be misled by the false news.
The rumour spread today, after Amartya was disqualified from the VP race and removed from the voters’ list just two days ago, a week after the initial candidate list was published on 29 August.
The Jucsu Election Commission stated that he is ineligible to be a candidate and a voter under Section 4.38 of the Jucsu Constitution because he is not a “regular and valid student” of the university.
According to university officials, Amartya, a student of the 2017-18 academic session, has failed an undergraduate course.
Although the university’s Academic Council and Syndicate granted him special consideration to retake the course, his student status was not deemed regular.
The Sampritir Oikya panel protested the disqualification that same day, calling the decision “unjust and conspiratorial”.
