The Posts and Telecommunications Division announced “Free Internet Day” today (18 July) on the occasion of the July Uprising Day.

During the anti-discrimination student movement demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs, mobile internet was shut down on the night of 17 July last year. The following night, on 18 July, broadband internet services were also suspended, leaving the entire country without internet access.

To mark the one-year anniversary of that movement, which later turned into a mass uprising and led to the toppling of the Awami League government, this initiative to offer customers 1 GB of internet data free of charge has been taken.

Subscribers will be able to use this data for five days. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has already instructed all mobile phone operators to take necessary measures to this end.

To get the free data, GP users will have to dial *121*1807#; Robi *4*1807#; Banglalink *121*1807; and Teletalk *111*1807#.

The BTRC’s System and Services Department disclosed this information in a notification last Wednesday.

The notification said on the occasion of the July Uprising Day, fulfilling the aspirations of the people and declaring 18 July as Free Internet Day in the public interest, while telecom operators on 9 July were instructed to provide 1 GB free internet to their subscribers on 18 July with a validity of five days.

The Posts and Telecommunications Division said in commemoration of the July Uprising, all mobile subscribers are getting 1 GB of free data for a period of five days on 18 July.
