National University’s Honours Programme to Be Reduced to Three Years

The interim government has decided to shorten the National University’s four-year honours programme to three years, with an additional year dedicated to diploma and technical education. M Aminul Islam, special assistant to the education adviser, announced this decision at an event marking International Education Day in Dhaka.

He stated that students would receive two certificates—one for honours and another for a diploma—making them more employable. He emphasised that this dual certification would help students achieve their academic aspirations while also securing better job opportunities.

Addressing societal stigma around diploma and technical education, Aminul Islam called it a nationwide “taboo” that needs to be broken. He stressed the need for structural improvements in technical education, highlighting the shortage of qualified teachers and practical training facilities.

To address these gaps, the government plans to enhance laboratories, increase trainer availability, and ensure hands-on training, ultimately boosting employment prospects for graduates.
