An orphaned fawn of the endangered barking deer species, locally known as Maya Horin, was rescued from a village near the reserved forest in Suabil Union, Fatikchhari upazila.

The upazila administration supervised the handover of the fawn to Chattogram Zoo authorities today (29 June) for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

The fawn, estimated to be around two to three months old, was first spotted by local youth Abdul Quddus after it wandered into the village from the Shovonchhari forest. He alerted Harualchhari Union Parishad Chairman Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, who then contacted Fatikchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.

The UNO arranged for initial care and consulted Dr Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, curator of Chattogram Zoo, who recommended transferring the fawn to the zoo.

Dr Shuvo explained that the animal was in a weakened state and could not survive in the wild without its mother due to injuries and lack of nourishment. Therefore, specialised treatment and rehabilitation at the zoo were deemed essential.

The fawn is now under the care of wildlife specialists at Chattogram Zoo, where it will be closely monitored until it is fit to return to its natural habitat or continue conservation care.
