Sledging incident at Rajshahi University sparks clash, 20 injured

A post-match altercation over sledging led to a violent clash between students of the Management Studies and Mathematics departments at Rajshahi University, injuring at least 20 people, including a faculty member. The incident occurred around 5pm on Sunday at Sheikh Kamal Stadium after the Mathematics department secured a narrow three-run victory in the inter-departmental cricket semi-final.

Eyewitnesses said tensions flared when Management Studies students were leaving the stadium around 4:30pm. The situation escalated when some allegedly threw bricks at Mathematics students from outside. Soon after, a group of Management Studies students stormed the stadium, attacking their rivals with sticks and bricks.

Among the injured, Mathematics professor Zakir Hossain suffered a head injury. Several students, including Shahid Akhtar, Manik Babu, and Said Siam, were hospitalized at Rajshahi Medical College, while others received first aid. No injuries were reported among Management Studies students.

The university’s Proctorial team and police intervened to restore order. Proctor Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the clash but could not verify the exact number of injuries. He noted that faculty members from the Management Studies department were absent during the match.
