Sust lifts ban on student politics on conditions

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) has suspended the previously imposed ban on student politics, allowing certain political activities on campus with the approval of the university proctor.
According to a notice signed by Registrar Sayed Salim Md Abdul Kadir today (22 September), the decision was taken following a meeting between the Proctorial body and representatives of all student organisations.
The notice stated that the suspension of the ban was unanimously recommended in the meeting, and students will now be allowed to engage in welfare-oriented political activities, provided they maintain mutual respect and discipline, and only with the proctor’s prior approval.
However, political meetings and processions will continue to remain prohibited in academic buildings, administrative offices, and residential halls. Activities related to the Sust Central Students’ Union (Sucsu) election—such as panel formation and introductory events—may be held with hall authorities’ permission.
Student politics under party banners had been banned on the Sust campus for nearly 10 months, following a circular issued on 6 November last year. But with the upcoming Sucsu polls, the Proctorial body recently recommended lifting the ban.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prof AM Sarwar Uddin Chowdhury has announced that the Sucsu election will be held in the second week of November.
