The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the restoration of Begum Rokeya University’s original name, Rangpur University. If otherwise, they have declared of a complete campus shutdown, the group announced at a press conference on Monday (10 February) at the university’s main gate in Rangpur.
Leaders including Shamsur Rahman, Rahmat Ali, Arman Hossain, Sakib Mia, Ahsan Habib Rocky, and Mehedi Hasan were present at the event. In a written statement, Shamsur Rahman Suman claimed that the university was originally established as Rangpur University in 2008 under a caretaker government, but was later renamed by then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for political reasons. He argued that the existing Begum Rokeya College in Rangpur has led to identity confusion for students.
The movement’s leaders further alleged that attempts to reinstate the original name had been suppressed during the ruling party’s tenure. They also referenced a 2017 decision to approve a private university named Rangpur University, which was later revoked following student protests.
As part of their movement, students have organised signature campaigns, memorandums, human chains, and protests. On 5 February, enraged students bulldozed Sheikh Hasina’s inauguration plaque and declared the campus as Rangpur University.
Despite widespread support from students, teachers, and staff, the authorities have yet to take action, sparking student outrage. If the demand is not met within a week, students will enforce a complete campus shutdown, holding the administration responsible for any consequences.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Shawkat Ali stated that he had communicated the demand to the government and education ministry, expressing hope for a favourable resolution.
