Dear book haters, this one’s for you (yes, you!)

23 April is World Book Day, a day all about books. Books? Oh my gosh, ewww! Super boring. Too long. Too many words! (Well, not denying the last sentence.)

Sound familiar? If you are someone whose usual take on reading is something like this, congratulations! You are the star of this article.

But, no worries, this is not one of these “Top 10 books you should read at least once in your life” lectures. This is a sort of love letter to your inner book hater—what if you gave one last chance to any book to surprise you!

You don’t hate books, you hate being bored

As a new reader, it is completely impossible to love the book at first glance, but who told you that you must start with a 600+ page classic to be considered a “Bookworm or “actual book reader” person?

Not true, if a certain book doesn’t warm your soul, maybe you should explore something:

  • Read thrillers, and eventually it will feel like action movies on paper.
  • Memoirs hits different; they spill more tea than TikTok.
  • Graphic novels that feel like real with colour visuals and vibes.

However, reading is not a type of punishment; you just need the right destination.

You’re already a reader, you just don’t know it

Ever read a Facebook post, tweet, article or randomly stalk Reddit threads at midnight? Congratulations, you’re reading even right now; you are reading this article, too! The internet is just books with a variety of content and a shorter attention span.

Now, suppose you bring this scrolling energy into the books, and ultimately it keeps you up like a Netflix binge.

The right book feels like gossip

Did you ever feel when a story feels personal? Like, suddenly the character gets in you! Well, that’s not a coincidence. That’s the hidden magic of the books that clearly know where to hit you— either in the heart, in the gut or in the trauma.

Doesn’t matter what kind of books you like, whether it can be romance, thriller, horror or comedy, there’s a book written like it was meant for your soul. But the thing is, you haven’t got the right one yet.

Short attention span? There’s a book for that, too

Not all books are meant to be slow burns. Sometimes it hurts the stomach. However, some books come at you fast and go as soon as possible. Try these on-

  • Novellas, not the actual novel. (These are short books but big punch)
  • Audiobooks (Who said reading has to be through pages?)
  • Short stories (The moment when you’re having your snack)

Moreover, there’s no pressure to finish, no guilt. Just chilling and vibes!

Wait, still not convinced? Let’s make a deal

Now pick one book. Just one. It can be anything – a long story, short story, poem, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel or whatever. Simply pick the one that matches your taste in movies, series, memes or even music. Give it a proper 30 minutes. If you hate it, well, I will back off.

But……if…….if……you find yourself thinking “Ummm, this is not that much bad I was thinking about” ……..Then I win!

The point should be noted: you don’t have to be a bookworm overnight. But maybe, just maybe, one day you’ll look up and keep telling yourself, “The book was better”. (Ironic, see who’s saying, huh)
