International Internet Day: Celebrating the inception of a digital revolution

“Internet”—a small word with eight letters, but the impact of this word is larger than life. The internet has revolutionised our whole world by bringing us together from all corners of the world.

Today, thanks to the Internet, we can find any information and connect with our friends and family from anywhere with just a click on our electronic device.

Not only for connecting and searching something, the internet has more use than that. From education to entertainment, employment to corporate endeavors, buying something online, and so much more, we can open unimaginable digital doors with a keystroke because of this internet.

So how was this internet created?

In the 1960s, a research organisation of the US military named the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) experimentally developed communication systems between some universities and laboratories in the United States. 

After that, in 1962, the Global Network was proposed for MIT, which resulted in DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) working to create the Global Network, and finally, the internet was first launched on 29 October, 1969 and during that time, DARPA experimentally developed communication systems between some US universities and laboratories. 

In 1983, the internet was opened for worldwide use. However, the word ‘Internet’ was used for the first time in 1994. Speaking of Bangladesh, the internet was first introduced in our country back in 1996.

Since the launch, the users of the internet increasing day by day in our country; according to the data of the World Bank, about 45 percent of the total population use internet as of 2023.

To celebrate this wonderful invention of humankind every year on 29th October International Internet Day is observed to remember the inception of internet from 2005 promoted by the Association of Internet Users.

Despite having a lot of advantages, there are some of disadvantages of internet as well: cyber crime, lack of privacy, addiction of social media, shortened attention span, spread of fake news etc.

In the end, with both positive and negative usage of the internet, let’s embrace the internet’s potential responsibly, ensuring it remains a tool for connection, growth, and positive impact on society.
