Society needs to accept that some of us were born to sleep

Let’s be honest; don’t you like to sleep a little bit more? If yes, then why shouldn’t we embrace it? Some of us indeed love to sleep; others love to sleep a little bit longer and even sleep all day. But productivity influencers make sleep lovers’ lives chaotic. We understand you are a morning person—waking up early in the morning, then jogging, then doing yoga, then having a healthy breakfast, and so on. Good for you. Then why do you people like to change our lifestyles as well? We maintain our health on our own terms; we don’t require guidance from fitness experts! Good for us, we have a whole day dedicated to the sleepers community: 14 March is World Sleep Day, folks!

Morning people: The true villains of society

Do you know who the real enemy in society is? The ones who wake up before sunrise do so by choice, and most interestingly, they also want the world to join with them. When they are doing exercise, making coffee, replying to emails, etc., the rest of us try to open even one eye, and sometimes we can’t even remember where we are. So their expectation is for us to be on their level early in the morning— it is never going to happen! Not sorry!

But it doesn’t mean we would rather not be productive; we simply want to be strategically productive after 2pm.

The myth of ‘wasting the day’

When people say you are wasting your day by sleeping too much. Now the question is, don’t they know that sleeping is productive? It fuels the energy of our bodies; the more you sleep, the more energy you will get. It’s amazing productivity in dreamland. When people are wasting their time sitting and getting angry in traffic and even gossiping, that time we just simply take a nap. The real productive time should be the number of naps taken per day, and just by doing that, we are achieving peak performance for the day, so no time wasting!

A guide to surviving mornings when you’re not a morning person

There’s a quote, “Rise and shine,” and we sleep-lovers disagree with this statement. When people will understand that mornings are a scam, but still, society forces us to deal with them, which is unfortunate! But no worries; if you are not a morning person, here’s a simple survival guide. These are –

  • Step 1: Don’t wake up. Close your eyes for as long as you can. Ignore the alarm, pretend it’s not happening, and then it will simply stop.
  • Step 2: Now, it’s time to bargain with your mind; keep convincing yourself that hitting the snooze button constantly won’t ruin your entire schedule.
  • Step 3: Unfortunately, now if you are forced to wake up, complain loudly until someone brings you chai (tea). Here’s the twist: when you are shouting, if your mother is sending you a flying chappal on your face, then the responsibility is yours. Proceed with caution.
Let the sleepers sleep

Society treats sleeping as a horrible crime. Unbelievable! Sleepers have life already figured out. Life is not just about hustling but also about having a perfect napping schedule; now it can be three times a day or even more. Still, people labelled us “lazy” and “unambitious”. On the contrary, people who spend hours and hours on social media before bedtime are totally fine. Where’s justice? Simply, let the sleepers sleep.

Lastly, if you grew up in a Bengali family, you know the true suffering behind sleeping a little bit longer. Our mothers have wonderful techniques to wake us up. From turning off the fan in the middle of summer to talking loudly near you, these are very strong weapons for them. Classic! So, society needs to accept the fact that some people were born to sleep!
