Have you ever considered how your studies can significantly contribute to combating climate change? It could appear that only big changes can solve this problem.

But if everyone makes small changes, they could have a huge effect. Young people all around the world are leading a drive to protect our planet, and you are those who lead the effort. If you want to take part in this movement, what could you do?

What makes sustainability important for students?

Now, more than ever, climate change is impacting people, animals and the future we all live in. Have you noticed that the weather is more extreme, the storms are odd, or the temperatures are higher?

They remind us that something must be done. You’re stepping into this challenge as students, but you also have the opportunity to help solve it. Don’t you think that everyone should care about the planet? The good point is, being sustainable is possible by making different daily decisions.

A few easy changes that lead to big results

Wouldn’t it be great if making sustainable choices were easy and didn’t take much time? Suppose you use reusable water bottles and decide to walk or bike somewhere, rather than riding.

You may have wondered, sometimes, how much extra energy you waste by not turning off lights and devices. You can greatly lower your carbon footprint by turning off your electronics, recycling correctly, and cutting down on your meat intake one day a week.

Would you be amazed to realise that such simple acts, when accomplished by many students worldwide, can change the public’s view of climate change?

Getting creative: Upcycling is a great way to do your school project

Is art or DIY stuff your thing? You could also convert trash into something valuable. A lot of schools are setting up workshops that turn old materials into new items. Have you learned about Junk Kouture, a global contest where students make fashion pieces using only recycled materials? It’s amazing to watch creativity and sustainability both shine through in one place. They help prevent waste and inspire new ideas about consumption in people.

Working together: Students taking action on climate

You may not know that UNICEF’s “The Green Rising” is trying to inspire 10 million young people to act on climate by 2025. Students in schools around the world are initiating campaigns, planting trees, reducing plastic use, and advocating for more environmentally friendly actions.

Do you think about making a climate club at your school or signing up? When teens get together, they can make themselves heard with absolute certainty. Aren’t you interested in joining a movement that is changing our world for the better?

The example lead schools are giving

Have you ever thought about the green methods your school is following? You can find climate action plans, energy-efficient structures, zero-waste policies, and eco-friendly foodservice areas at many schools today.

Have you spotted recycling bins, solar panels or gardens on your campus? They display that education and sustainability are related and help students become responsible citizens across the world. It’s truly exciting when a campus cares as much about the environment as you do.

Why haven’t you taken action yet?

It might seem that whatever you do doesn’t matter because the issue is so big. Imagine what would happen if each student made only one sustainability-focused change.

Can you imagine if what you do encourages others around you to move in the same direction? What’s the next step you can take to help the environment?

You can strongly contribute to action against climate change by practising sustainability, joining creative activities and being with other students. The decisions we make today will influence the planet’s fate, which is why so many students are stepping up. Don’t you want to be one of them?
