How to create Studio Ghibli-style images without a ChatGPT Plus subscription

OpenAI’s new GPT-4o update has sparked a trend online of people creating Studio Ghibli-style portraits of various images including memes.

However, this feature is only available exclusive for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and select subscription tiers, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claiming that overwhelming demand delayed the feature’s rollout to free users.

Despite this, those who want this feature for free can also use alternatives such as Gemini, GrokAI, Craiyon, Artbreeder, and other platforms offering free trials.

Gemini or Grok in particular can create such visuals, but need precise prompts, such as “a serene Ghibli-style girl with flowing hair under a cherry blossom tree,” according to a Times of India report.

To do this, you have to upload an image or type a prompt such as “portrait in Studio Ghibli style, lush forest background, soft colors,” and let the AI do the rest of the work.

However, these tools may still not match GPT-4o’s photorealistic precision, though they can mimic the flowing hair, vibrant landscapes, and gentle expression aesthetics broadly.

For higher quality, platforms such as Runway ML, Leonardo AI, or Mage.space have free trials one can use with more more advanced editing options such as the ability to refine details like Totoro-esque fluffiness or Spirited Away-inspired hues.

Artbreeder is another tool which can be used to blend images and tweak styles with better control as well, though some features require a paid upgrade.
