Tucked away in the north of Bangladesh, close to the Meghalaya border, Durgapur is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. With its pinkish hills, shimmering blue lakes, and winding rivers, this remote upazila of Netrokona offers breathtaking natural beauty that feels almost untouched. Though not as widely promoted as other tourist destinations, Birishiri in Durgapur remains a gem for travellers seeking peace and adventure.

Top attractions in Durgapur

  • Shomeshwari River: Originating in the Garo-Khasi hills of Meghalaya, this river is the lifeline of Durgapur. Its character changes with the seasons—roaring during monsoon, tranquil in winter—always painting a picture-perfect landscape against the rolling hills.
  • China Clay Hills & Lake: Known locally as China Matir Pahar, these unique pink-hued hills and their sparkling blue lakes are a dream for photographers and nature lovers. Formed from special clay soil, the hills glow in the rain, while the lake—coloured by natural minerals—adds a surreal charm. Swimming, however, is not advised as the lake is deep and unsafe.
  • Limestone Lake (Neel Pukur): A turquoise-blue pond surrounded by clay hills, ideal for moments of quiet reflection away from city chaos.
  • Bijoypur Border & BGB Camp: From here, travellers can gaze at the green, cloud-kissed mountains of Meghalaya without crossing a passport checkpoint.
  • Historic & Cultural Spots: The Hajong Mata Roshimoni Monument stands as a symbol of resistance against oppression, while Ranikhong Church (built in the early 1900s) offers a serene glimpse into the region’s history. The Tribal Cultural Academy, once the palace of Maharaja Susang, showcases the heritage of the Hajong and Garo communities.

How to get there
From Dhaka, buses to Birishiri leave from Mohakhali and take about 7 hours, though the last stretch can be rough. Alternatively, a train from Kamalapur to Jharia takes around 10–11 hours, after which local transport can bring you to the sites. Most attractions can be covered in a single day.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history lover, or simply in need of an escape, Durgapur promises a journey that soothes the soul and sparks wonder.
