Framework for Separate Institutional Structure for Seven DU-Affiliated Colleges

A four-member high-level expert committee has been formed to draft a framework for an independent institutional structure equivalent to a university for the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU). The Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) will head the committee, according to the Ministry of Education.

The committee includes the Additional Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, DU’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and UGC member Dr. Tanzimuddin Khan. The committee is expected to complete its work within four months.

The committee will explore alternatives to detaching the seven colleges from DU while maintaining their independent identities within a university-equivalent structure. The process will involve consultation with senior government officials, student and teacher representatives, and other stakeholders.

In 2017, under the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, seven prominent colleges in Dhaka were affiliated with DU to improve education standards. However, students have recently been demanding the establishment of a separate university for these colleges.
