In 2024, Dhaka University (DU) secured the top position in Bangladesh for the number of published scientific research articles. Daffodil International University (DIU) ranked second. The top three institutions have retained their positions from the previous year.
This information is sourced from the Scopus research database. On 4 January 2024, the online magazine Scientific Bangladesh published its annual report based on scientific papers indexed in Scopus-listed international journals.
According to Scopus, Dhaka University maintained its leading position with 1,500 publications in 2024, up from 1,410 in the previous year. Daffodil International University ranked second with over 1,100 publications, compared to 1,080 in the previous year.
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) secured the third position with approximately 900 publications, followed by Rajshahi University in fourth
place.
In the ranking of scientific publications, BRAC University came fifth, Jahangirnagar University sixth, Bangladesh Agricultural University seventh, North South University eighth, Chittagong University ninth, and Khulna University tenth.
In 2024, the primary focus areas for Bangladeshi researchers included engineering, computer science, medical science, environmental science, and social sciences.
The report covered various types of research documents, including articles, conference papers, reviews, book chapters, letters, corrections, notes, editorials, data papers, books, and short surveys.
However, no patents were registered in 2024. For the first time, publications in textile research were observed last year. Among the top 15 funding organisations for research in 2024, 11 were foreign.
Among national organisations, the Ministry of Science and Technology ranked first (second overall). BUET and the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) were the only university and council, respectively, to make it to the top 15 funding organisations.
The top journals for publishing Bangladeshi researchers’ articles included Heliyon, PLOS ONE, Scientific Reports, IEEE Access, Health Science Reports, Sustainability Switzerland, RSC Advances, and Environmental Science and Pollution Research.
According to Scopus, Dr Abu Reza Md Toufiqul Islam, a faculty member of the Disaster Management Department at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, topped the list of individual contributors in 2024 with 106 publications. He was followed by M Khalid Hossain from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and Akbar Hossain from the Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute, Dinajpur.
With 15,413 scientific articles published, Bangladesh ranked third in South Asia in 2024.
Although the number of publications by Bangladeshi researchers has increased in recent years, the country still lags behind India and Pakistan in terms of scientific output, despite having similar socio-economic conditions. In South Asia, India ranks first, and Pakistan ranks second in scientific publications.
