BUTEX commemorates July Uprising anniversary whilst mourning Milestone tragedy victims

Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) marked the first anniversary of the July Uprising yesterday (5 August) with a solemn ceremony that also paid tribute to victims of the recent Milestone College tragedy. The Institution of Textile Engineers and Technologists (ITET) organised the commemorative event at BUTEX auditorium.
BUTEX Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Zulhash Uddin addressed the gathering, stating the July Uprising “transformed from quota reform demands into a broader mass movement for rights and justice”. He emphasised the movement represented “a collective struggle by ordinary citizens” transcending political party lines.
ITET Joint Convener ATM Samsul Uddin Khan described the July Uprising as “a pivotal moment in our democratic journey”, praising young activists who “illuminated the path towards justice and equality”.
In response to the Milestone College incident, former ITET General Secretary AKM Mohsin Ahmed called for immediate policy changes to prohibit aviation training activities in densely populated areas, citing public safety concerns.
The ceremony concluded with memorial prayers for July Uprising martyrs and Milestone tragedy victims. The event drew participation from university officials, faculty members, students, and prominent textile industry professionals.
